Frequently asked questions
Buying Moon Land
Can you really own land on the Moon?
It’s a surprisingly complicated question.
The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prevents nations from claiming sovereignty over the Moon. It does not expressly address private ownership of lunar land, and the legal implications of private lunar property claims have been debated ever since.
There is currently no internationally recognised land registry for the Moon, and private lunar property rights remain an unresolved area of international law.
A Moon Estates deed records the land allocated to its named owner from the lunar holdings allocated to Moon Estates following our appointment as a Lunar Ambassador in 2000.
Where does Moon Estates’ land come from?
Moon Estates was appointed as a Lunar Ambassador by the Lunar Embassy in 2000.
The land we sell comes from lunar holdings allocated to Moon Estates by Dennis Hope, founder of the Lunar Embassy, whose original lunar land claim dates back to 1980.
Every Moon land allocation we sell is allocated from these holdings.
Where is my land on the Moon?
Your Moon land is allocated a specific area of the lunar surface and identified by its own unique plot number.
Your personalised deed records your plot number, and your lunar map shows you where your land is located.
What is a plot number?
Your plot number is the unique reference used to identify your Moon land.
It appears on your personalised Moon Deed and allows your particular area of the Moon to be identified within our land records.
How big is an acre?
An acre is 4,047 square metres - much bigger than many people imagine.
Even our 1-acre plot gives you enough imaginary room for a house, a big garden, a pool and plenty of Moon left over.
For those with bigger lunar ambitions, we also offer 10 and 100 acres.
Can I buy more than one acre?
Absolutely. Choose from 1, 10 or 100 acres.
The more land you choose, the more special the presentation:
- 1 acre - Presented in our signature silver-foiled folder
- 10 acres - Presented in our premium gift box
- 100 acres - Presented in our luxury Moon Estates presentation case, with ribbon tie
Can I buy Moon land for myself?
Of course.
Moon land makes an extraordinary gift, but there’s absolutely no requirement to give it away. If you’d rather have your own piece of the Moon, simply choose “It’s for me” when you order and we’ll put your name on the deed.
The Gift
What do I receive?
Every Moon land purchase includes a personalised Moon Deed, a lunar map showing the location of the land, the Lunar Constitution and Bill of Rights, the Original Declaration of Ownership, a Mineral Rights document and a Welcome Letter.
Everything is personalised and presented according to the acreage you choose.
Can I put someone else’s name on the deed?
Yes. If you’re buying Moon land as a gift, simply tell us whose name you’d like on the deed when you personalise the order.
You can have the physical Moon land presentation delivered to you to give in person, or send it directly to the recipient.
Can I put more than one name on the deed?
Yes. You can put more than one name on the deed - perfect for couples, families or land on the Moon that’s going to be shared.
Enter the names exactly as you’d like them to appear when you personalise your order, up to a maximum of 36 characters including spaces.
Can I add a personal message?
Yes. If you’re sending a gift, you can add your own personal message.
If you’ve also added an Instant Digital Gift Announcement, we’ll use the same message there too, so you only need to write it once.
What is the Instant Digital Gift Announcement?
For an additional £5, we’ll create a personalised video announcement for their Moon land.
At the date and time you choose, they’ll receive an email with a link to their video, announcing that they’ve been gifted 1, 10 or 100 acres of land on the Moon.
The video will include your personal message and their allocated plot number, giving them something exciting to open straight away while their physical Moon land presentation is on its way.
It’s ideal for birthdays, last-minute gifts or whenever you want the surprise to arrive at exactly the right moment.
Can I choose when the Digital Gift Announcement is sent?
Yes. Choose the date and time you’d like us to email it to the recipient.
All times are UK time (GMT or BST, depending on the date).
If you want it sent today, simply choose today’s date. Or, if you’d rather give it to them yourself, choose “I’d rather send it myself” and we’ll make it available to you instead.
